Use these prayers for jealousy to ask the Lord to help you overcome jealous feelings, how to love others with the right motives, and more.
There are a few sneaky sins that many of us struggle with, that appear small but can grow deep in its roots, and wreak havoc both inside of us and around us. Jealousy is one of those sins.
The Oxford Dictionary describes jealousy as showing or feeling an envious resentment of someone or their possessions, achievements, qualities, or perceived advantages. Jealousy is also linked to the feeling or fear that someone you love, or what you have will be taken away from you. When it comes to relationships this is especially evident.
These feelings of jealousy can be accompanied by emotions like anger, bitterness, and vengeance, and the longer they seep into our hearts and are not dealt with, the greater the damage it does, not only to ourselves but to our relationships with others. That is why it is important to take jealousy seriously and ask God to help you in prayer.
God’s word isn’t silent on the topic of jealousy. In fact, it mentions it various times throughout scripture. If you are struggling with feelings of jealousy, you are not alone. I hope that these prayers for jealousy accompanied by scripture will bless you, and bring a change in your heart.
7 Prayers for Jealousy
1. Prayer of Forgiveness for Jealousy
Lord,
My heart feels heavy today with the realization of how deeply rooted my jealousy has become. It has consumed my thoughts at times, and directed my actions. I ask that You would please be so gracious as to forgive me for my sins, and cleanse me from these feelings of jealousy.
You know the root of this jealousy, and just like most human sins, there is often pride involved in it.
Please help me to humble myself before You, and strip away all the layers of pride inside of me. Help me not to compare myself to others, their achievements, relationships, or what they have. You have given me this life on purpose with a purpose. Help me to remember that you never intended for me to be another person.
If there is anyone for me to look at intently it is Christ. Please remove my eyes from others in this unhealthy, sinful way, and help me to fix my eyes on Jesus. May I be humbled as I compare myself to Christ, and find grace to look more like Him. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
2. Prayer To Overcome Jealousy
Heavenly Father,
Thank You so much for sending Jesus to take my place on the cross. Because of His selfless life and death, I get to receive eternal life, and a relationship with You, that nothing else in the world could ever compare to. I confess, sometimes I do allow other things to overshadow what is most important in my life.
My struggle with jealousy feels so fierce at times, that I forget what I already have and who I already am in Christ. Please help me to remember that there is not any earthly achievement, possession, or curated life that compares to knowing Christ. Please forgive me for the times when I forget my citizenship in heaven, and dwell on earthly matters.
Please help me to overcome this jealousy inside of me, and grant me a way out in the moments when those thoughts and feelings surface. Help me to see others as people who, just like me, are in need of Christ, rather than competitors who I need to measure myself against. In Jesus’ name, amen.
3. Prayer to Accept Who God Has Made Me As
Father,
Thank You for creating every person on this earth uniquely, purposely and unlike anyone else. Thank You for creating me the way You have. Although I don’t always see it this way, You have made me to be me, and I am so sorry for the many times I have wished I could be someone else. It is way too easy to look into the small parts of people’s lives and hate your own as a result of it.
In reality, we are all sinners who feel the effects of our sin, the sin of others and the brokenness of this world. No matter how ideal our lives may seem from the outside, everyone is struggling with something on the inside. Please help me to replace my time of comparison with prayer not only for myself but for those who I wish I could be.
Help me to see them as people who need You and give me compassion for them. Help me to accept who You have made me to be, and desire nothing else but to look like my Savior, Jesus Christ. In His name, amen.
4. Prayer for Humility
Father,
Thank You for Your grace that covers my sin. Today, I ask that You would please forgive me for my jealousy towards others. Please forgive me of the pridefulness that I have when I am comparing myself to someone else. Sometimes there is a false sense of humility, especially when it seems like someone else has it better than I do.
But that is not humility at all. But in reality, I am not showing humility in these times, I am showing pride and self-importance because my eyes are fixed on myself. Please forgive me for those thoughts, and remove any bitter feelings inside of me.
Help me to be more grateful for what You are doing in my life and who You are to me. It is easy to be discontent and forget to be thankful when you are looking at someone else’s life with envy. Please help me to grow in true humility, and to look more to people’s needs than the things that are on the surface. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
5. Prayer to Grow in Godliness
Dear God,
Thank You for sending Your Son into the world for our sake. Though He lived in the world, He was not of the world, and neither were His priorities. Please help me to model my life after Christ’s example.
Please forgive me for the many times that I have grown in worldliness instead of godliness. Your Word says that jealousy and quarreling among us is an indication of worldliness.
It is not something that pleases You when we think or act in jealousy towards one another. Please forgive me for my thoughts that have been filled with jealousy, and my actions led by jealousy.
I ask that You would help me to take my eyes off of myself and fix them on Christ. Help me not to conform to the world and its patterns, but rather to be transformed by the renewing of my mind. In Jesus’ name, amen.
6. Prayer to Love Others
Lord,
Thank You for showing us what real love looks like. It is not a love that takes, but a love that gives. Thank You for Christ’s sacrificial love on the cross, and for dying for us even while we were still sinners.
I ask that You would help me to love others in the way that You have loved me. Help me to grow in a love that is patient, kind, and humble. Your Word says that love does not envy. I can think of many times when I have been envious, and not shown love.
Please forgive me for those times, and even the current feelings that I am dealing with. Help me to grow in selfless love towards others. Remind me that there is no need to look at other people as my competition, but rather to see them as you see them, and to see myself as you see me too.
Help me to love others in a way that changes how I approach them, not as people to be compared to, but as people who need the gospel, as I do. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
7. Prayer for the Right Motives
Father,
There is nothing that I can hide from You. You know every thought in my mind, and every hidden secret in my heart. There is nothing that is unseen, unheard or unknown to You. This is both a scary and a relieving truth, because though You know every single thing about me, You still choose me, and love me.
Thank You so much for Your unconditional love in Christ. Knowing that You know all things about me, I ask that You would help me to be honest with myself about my true intentions. Please forgive me for the times when I have the wrong motives, and I do things out of selfish ambition or vain conceit.
Forgive me for the jealousy that I have allowed to control me, and allowing it to taint the way I view others and myself. Please help me to view people through the lens of the gospel, and to look beyond what is on the surface.
Help me to fight off feelings of jealousy, instead of entertaining them. May my motivations towards others be pleasing to You, and beneficial to them. Please place Your desires in my heart, and remove any that are motivated by the wrong things. In Jesus’ name, amen.
