Use these 6 prayers for couples to pray for peace in the relationship, forgiveness, for mutual encouragement & service, and more.
When it comes to a godly relationship, there are always three people involved. You and your partner, and God. Yes, a godly community around the two of you is important, but at the end of the day it comes down to a husband, his wife, and their relationship with the Lord. In fact, He is the foundation for our relationships, and if it is His will, our future marriage.
It is only when two people have their own relationship with the Lord that they can come together and share that relationship with Him. If you are a Christian couple, keeping your relationship Christ-centered is important and challenging at the same time.
One of the best things you can do in your relationship is to learn to seek the Lord together. In prayer you get to do just that. You get to bring your individual struggles and relational issues to Him together, and grow spiritually. But not only that. You are able to ask the Lord for guidance, to use your relationship for His Kingdom, and to be a blessing in one another’s life.
If you’ve never prayed together before, there is no better time to get started than now. If you have prayed together, and you are looking for more ways that you can grow in your relationship, these prayers for couples are just for you.
Prayers For Couples

Prayer to prioritize time with God
Lord, we recognize how important it is for us to spend time with You together. We pray for Your forgiveness for the times that we do not regard You, or live as though our relationship belongs to us, when it truly is a gift from You. For us to even begin prioritizing seeking You, together, we have to seek You individually.
Please help us grow in our personal relationship with You. When we come together, may it be out of the overflow of our relationship with You. Help us to see our desperate need for Your Word in our lives each day, and to be transformed by it as we submit our lives to Your truth.
Help us to build our relationship not on ourselves but on You as our foundation. May we learn to look to Your Word for guidance, and how You want us to treat one another. Help us to grow in discipline, and to prioritize our relationship with You not only privately but together. May our prayer lives begin to shape our relationship into something that honors You and reflects You to those around us.
In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
Prayer for peace in the relationship
Thank You, Lord, that we can experience peace with You and through You. Through Jesus that peace has been possible because of His sacrifice on the cross, and we simply can’t thank You enough that we get to live in that reality. It is a gift that is easy to take for granted and we pray that You would make our hearts forever grateful.
We can also experience peace in our relationship. Though we have our differences, and will disagree and even argue with one another at times, I pray that You would help us both pursue peace. Help us to become peacemakers, and to work through disagreements in a way that honors You and is respectful to one another.
My prayer is that we would both experience Your peace that surpasses all understanding, and share that peace in our relationship. When one of us or the both of us are lacking peace or have had our peace stolen because of circumstances, please help us to encourage one another toward Your peace.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
Prayer to live out the character of love
Lord, You have shown us the greatest love that the world has ever known. In Your love for us, You sent Your Son to die on our behalf, that we might be able to have a relationship with You. That kind of love that You display for us is the same love that You call us to share with one another as well.
Your Word describes that love for us in detail. It is a love that is patient. A love that is kind. A love that is not envious, boastful or proud. It is a love that is not rude or self-seeking. It is a love that is not easily angered. This love doesn’t keep records of wrongdoings. Instead, it is a love that delights and rejoices with the truth. It is a love that never gives up or loves faith, and is always hopeful. It is a love that never fails because it endures through every circumstance. It is a love that lasts forever.
That is the kind of love that Jesus loves us with. To say that it is easy or even comes naturally would be a lie. Loving this way is not easy, but it is what You call us to. Please help us to love one another in this way. Help us to be aware of places in our lives where we show impatience, are easily angered, prideful, or any other character that we are lacking in, and help us to pursue it.
In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
Prayer to serve one another well
Father, thank You for the example of Jesus as one who came not to be served but to serve. We get it so wrong sometimes thinking that it is more blessed or honorable to be the one who is being served but the truth is that we get to reflect Jesus most, not when we are being served by others, but when we serve others.
As humans we are all inclined to think of our own needs first. It takes deliberate effort to consider others first or to think of their needs above our own. But that is exactly what Jesus lived out. He humbled Himself to become like one of us. Help us to grow in humility, so that we can serve one another well. Teach us to lay down our lives for one another, as Christ did.
Help us to be less focused one what we can get out, or how we can be served and to look to one another’s needs. May we grow to regard one another higher than ourselves, and to consider each other. May we grow in selflessness and look more and more like Jesus as we serve one another.
It’s in Your Name, I pray, amen.
Prayer to show forgiveness
Lord, I’m realizing that everything we pray for really just points back to Christ. He showed us true forgiveness. When we were still sinners, who wanted nothing to do with Him, He showed us grace and ushered us into a reconciled relationship with You. Our offense toward Him was greater than any sin that someone could commit toward us. Yet, He forgave us, not only for our past sins, but for our current and future sins as well.
We are both sinful because we are both human. No matter how much we love one another, the truth is that we will fail each other. We will disappoint one another, and we will offend and even since against each other. Because we are fallible, we need one another’s grace. Without true forgiveness we only heap bitterness, anger and unforgiveness in our hearts.
You don’t desire us to walk in unforgiveness. You command us to forgive one another and to pray for each other. Please, help us walk in grace with one another. May whoever offends the other show true remorse and repentance, and the one who has been offended show genuine grace and forgiveness. Help us to grow in grace toward one another and to put our trust in Christ and not one another.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
Prayer to be an encouragement to one another
Father, from the very beginning You have created man and said that it is not good for him to be alone. You have created us for companionship with one another, and we are so thankful that we get to do this thing called life together. You have created us with roles that are complementary because You have created us differently, yet equal in value.
My prayer is that our relationship would be a gift to both of our lives. Where one of us lacks, struggles or experiences weakness, Lord, I pray that the other would strengthen, encourage and help where needed. Please help us to be one another’s cheerleaders and to spur one another one in truth and love.
Help us to spend time in prayer for one another, and to lead one another back to You. Help us to keep one another accountable in our time spent with You, and in the responsibilities and goals that we each have in front of us. May we grow in every area of our lives because of the influence we have on one another.
In Your Name, I pray, amen.
