Use these Bible verses on husbands to reflect on what God’s Word says about what a husband’s character and role should look like in marriage.

If there is any place to turn to for wisdom when it comes to marriage, it is the Bible. Marriage holds such a precious spot in God’s plan for humanity, that it is the earthly example that God uses to describe His relationship as the Groom, with His bride, the church.

Husbands get to reflect the character of Christ as groom in their marriage to their wives. That is both an honor, and quite intimidating, isn’t it? If you are a husband looking for God’s direction, wisdom, and encouragement in your role as a husband, the following scriptures will do just that.

One of the greatest themes that God calls the husband to reflect upon is that of love. When we search the world for the meaning of love, we can find many different definitions. The way that scripture describes Christ’s love for the church is that because of His love for His bride, He gave Himself up for her.

We know that Jesus did this by sacrificing His life on the cross. When scripture refers to husbands loving their ways in a self-sacrificing way, it refers to dying to oneself. In other words, looking to the needs of their wives first and loving her in a selfless way.

The best description of this kind of self-less, self-sacrificing, Christ-reflecting love is found in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7.

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”

This love is one that gives more than it seeks to gain. It is a difficult kind of love to practice, and God calls not only husbands, and wives but all His people to walk in this kind of love toward one another. On our own we can’t produce it; but as we lean on the Holy Spirit He fills us to overflow in this love.

Bible Verses on Husbands - husband and wife holding hands on the beach

Ephesians 5:25

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her

Colossians 3:19

Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.

1 Peter 3:7

Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.

Ephesians 5:28

In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.

Ephesians 5:31

For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.

1 Corinthians 11:3

But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.

Ecclesiastes 9:9

Enjoy life with your wife, whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun—all your meaningless days. For this is your lot in life and in your toilsome labor under the sun.

Ephesians 5:33

However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

Proverbs 18:22

He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the Lord.

1 Corinthians 7:1-5

Now for the matters you wrote about: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.” But since sexual immorality is occurring, each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman with her own husband. The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife. Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

Genesis 2:23

The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’for she was taken out of man.”

Ephesians 5:25-33

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— for we are members of his body.“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

Genesis 2:18

The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

1 Timothy 3:2

Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach.

1 Corinthians 7:10-11

To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband. But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce his wife.

Matthew 19:9

I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.

Genesis 1:27

So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

1 Corinthians 7:14

For the unbelieving husband has been sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife has been sanctified through her believing husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy.

Mark 10:6-9

“But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.’So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

Proverbs 31:10

A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.

1 Corinthians 10:13

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

1 Peter 3:7-10

Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.

Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. For, “Whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech.

Ephesians 5:29

After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church.

Matthew 19:6

So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.

May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth. A loving doe, a graceful deer – may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be intoxicated with her love.

Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.
