Use these Bible verses on wives as a single woman, wife, husband, or anyone learning how God defines a wife’s role in marriage.

Wives play a significant role in marriage. Although the role of the husband can sometimes be portrayed as the more “important” role, the truth is that God created male and female, or husband and wife as equal in value. The difference is that both were created with a unique purpose that works together wonderfully as we trust ourselves to God’s design.

These Bible verses on wives not only help wives to grow in their role as wives, but to walk in God’s desires for you, and learn how He wants to shape your character.

One of the most amazing ways in which scripture describes the purpose of wives is that she is a helper. Can you guess who else is referred to as Helper in scripture? That’s right, the Holy Spirit.

It is by no means an offensive description, but one that focuses on the strength of the wife rather than her weakness. Scripture similarly uses the word helper for God, when He is mentioned as our helper.

We do not see the Lord as weak when we identify Him as our Helper, in the same way the woman’s role of helper is so crucial and serves as a reflection of the Lord as our Helper when it is lived out well.

I hope that these verses encourage, renew, challenge, and transform you as a wife. You hold a dear place in His plan for marriage.

Scripture on Wives

Bible Verses on Wives - woman holding a wedding bouquet of flowers

Proverbs 12:4

A wife of noble character is her husband’s crown, but a disgraceful wife is like decay in his bones.

1 Corinthians 7:4

The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife.

Proverbs 31:10

A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.

Ephesians 5:22-23

Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.

1 Peter 3:1-6

Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives.

Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.

For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands, like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.

Titus 2:4-5

Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.

Psalm 128:3

Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your children will be like olive shoots around your table.

Proverbs 18:22

He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the Lord.

1 Peter 3:7

Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.

Genesis 2:24

That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.

Proverbs 31:10-31

A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value.

She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life. She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands. She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar.

She gets up while it is still night; she provides food for her family and portions for her female servants. She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.

She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks. She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night.

In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers. She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.

When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet. She makes coverings for her bed;she is clothed in fine linen and purple.

Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land. She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes.

She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.

She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her:

“Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.”

Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate

Proverbs 12:4

A wife of noble character is her husband’s crown, but a disgraceful wife is like decay in his bones.

Proverbs 19:14

Houses and wealth are inherited from parents, but a prudent wife is from the Lord.

Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord.

Ephesians 5:33

However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

Proverbs 14:1

The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down.

Proverbs 25:24

Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife.

1 Peter 3:6

Like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.

1 Corinthians 7:5

Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

Genesis 2:18

The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

1 Corinthians 7:2

But since sexual immorality is occurring, each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman with her own husband.

Ephesians 5:22-24

Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

Matthew 19:4-6

“Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

Colossians 3:18

Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.

Mark 10:9

Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.

1 Peter 3:1

Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives.

“But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.’So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

Proverbs 21:19

Better to live in a desert than with a quarrelsome and nagging wife.

1 Corinthians 11:3

But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.
