Want to keep Christ at the center of your weight loss journey? These prayers for weight loss will help you fix your eyes on God.
It may never have occurred to you before to pray about your weight loss. I know it never occurred to me for years of struggling with my weight! I always figured that I was the one who made the choices to get into that mess so I was the one who needed to clean up my act and fix it, right?
Except, in every area of our lives, God calls us to lean into Him.
I didn’t realize it at the time, but my battle with my weight was not just about the number on the scale. It was a battle against the idol I had made food in my life, my low self-confidence in my appearance, and so many more deeper issues on a heart level.
God wants to be a part of every area of your life, including your weight loss.
It’s an area where we are usually so embarrassed about our food choices and the way our body looks that we try to do it alone.
I’d challenge you today, even if you don’t talk to any other person in your life about this, to talk to God. Invite Him into your weight loss journey with the prayers below as inspiration.
You will notice I link to two websites in many of these prayers.
Both of these women have lost 100 pounds and maintained their weight loss for years.
They write about losing weight with Christ at the center of your weight loss journey and have lots of wisdom and personal experience to share in this area so I have added links to their websites with additional help for each of the topics below.
Now, let’s get praying!
Prayers For Weight Loss
Honor God In Your Eating
God, I want to honor You in my eating. I know I don’t always do that. I don’t even always know how to do that. There are so many diets out there that it feels overwhelming to choose what’s best for my body.
And, it’s embarrassing to admit that it doesn’t even occur to me to think about eating in a way to honor You most of the time.
So, Lord, will You please give me wisdom in how to eat in a way that helps my body run the way You designed it to function? Show me which foods are harmful and which foods are helpful for losing weight but also just nourishing my body well.
And, will You please give me a desire to eat those foods? Diets have felt like such a punishment to my body up until now but I want choosing the right foods to be another expression of an outpouring of my love for You and all You have done for me.
In Jesus’ Holy Name, I pray.
Amen.

Overcome The Sin Of Overeating
Lord,
I never meant to be a glutton but I overeat all the time and I know that isn’t honoring to You. Please show me when the next bite I take is sin.
Eating is a part of daily life and that’s how You designed our bodies to function but I know You didn’t design my body for a life of overindulging in foods that I know aren’t good for me. Help me to be mindful about my eating and intentional about the food I put into my body.
There are so many natural consequences that come from overeating and I’m experiencing a lot of them but, above all, I know that any sin separates me from You and I will fight to get back to a right relationship with You. I don’t want any wedges in between us.
Thank You for sending Your Son to die for my sin, taking my sin as far away as the east is from the west. Give me strength to break the chain of overeating.
In Your Son’s name, I pray.
Amen.

Overcome Emotional Eating
God,
I’m embarrassed to admit how often I turn to food to fix problems I know only You can solve. I know it’s not right but it’s become my regular response. I’ve made it such a habit to run to food when I’m sad, angry, hurt, bored, frustrated, or grieving.
Will You please show me healthier ways to respond to all of my emotions? Help me to process them in a way that I can acknowledge them and keep moving forward, not ignoring them and staying stuck like I have been.
I want running to You to be my first response, not my last resort. Please let Your strength work in my weakness here. I know where I am weak, You are strong.
Help me overcome this bad habit, Lord. Help me to crush the idol of food in my life and put You back in Your proper place as my top priority, my Almighty God.
In Your Name I pray,
Amen.

Treating My Body Like A Temple
Heavenly Father, even though I know Your Word is true and it tells me that my body is a temple, it doesn’t feel like it is very holy.
I have made so many bad choices when it comes to taking care of myself that I just feel fat, lazy, and sluggish.
I want that to stop starting today. Help bring Your Truth to life in my life by helping me embrace the Truth – that my body was lovingly created by You and, because of that (not because of anything I’ve done or haven’t done), it is worthy of tender loving care.
Show me ways that I can start treating my body well and viewing it through Your eyes, not as broken but as redeemed. I love You, Lord. Help me to show that in everything I do, including in the way I talk about, think about, and treat my body.
In Your Name I pray,
Amen.

Make Exercise An Act Of Worship
Lord,
honestly? I don’t like exercising all that much. It’s so hard to motivate myself to get up and move, even though I know it’s good for me. I’m so used to making exercise a punishment for overeating but I want that to end today.
I want to make exercise an act of worship as another expression of my love for You. Help me to find joy in moving my body. Show me fun ways to exercise that I might not have thought of to fit my life, time, and personality and bring an exercise buddy into my life so that we can motivate each other.
Protect me from the dangers of comparing myself with other people and show me how to start right where I am and start making exercise a consistent part of my life, whether I’m walking, running, kickboxing, swimming, dancing, or hula hooping.
In Your Name, I pray.
Amen.

Know Your Worth Is In Christ, Not Your Weight
Lord, when I step on the scale, I am so tempted to let it define me. A gain or a loss can make or break my day and I don’t want my mood to be dependent on the number on the scale.
I don’t want to feel worthless when I look in the mirror and hate what I see. Because, the Truth that I always seem to forget is that You created this body. You intentionally created me for a much bigger purpose than looking a certain way.
My worth doesn’t go up and down every day, even though my weight might because my worth is rooted in You and You alone. I am valuable because I am a daughter of the King, not because I can fit into size 2 skinny jeans.
Please fill my thoughts with these Truths when I am tempted to believe anything else. My worth, my identity, and my hope is in Christ alone and that cannot be shaken by even my poorest choices. I love You, Lord. Help me to believe these things to be true.
In Jesus’ Name, I pray.
Amen.

To Grow In The Fruit Of Self Control
Jesus, You have given me the gift of the fruit of the Spirit and I want to use that gift well. Self-control is not something that comes naturally at all to me but that’s why that gift had to come from You, right?
Help me to nurture it and grow in my self-discipline, especially in the area of food. Strengthen my willpower to say no to food cravings. Empower me to stand firm on the healthy boundaries that I know are best for my body, especially when temptation comes my way.
Teach me to learn the boundaries for my body, to honor them, and to learn to put aside my selfish desires that would lead me astray. Help me to see the danger there, especially in those small choices that I convince myself can’t possibly make a difference, and let me run the other way, straight into Your arms.
I love You and I trust that You know what’s best for me.
In Your Name I pray,
Amen.

When You Step On The Scale
God,
stepping on the scale can be so hard. It seems like it has the power to make or break my entire day. If I’ve lost weight, I feel like a champion and if I’ve gained weight, I feel like a failure. I don’t want the scale to dictate my mood anymore.
I don’t want to wear the number on the scale as part of my identity. My weight is not my worth. You are. Help me to make the best choices that I can and, when I step on the scale, help me to use that number as a tool to help me decide my next steps.
Give me wisdom to detach that number from my worth and just use that number as helpful information and that’s it. Give me strength to draw that boundary and stick to it, while remembering how You define me as a person.
I may not always be proud of my choices but I can always be proud of who I am because I am Your masterful creation. Protect my thoughts from comparison, envy, bitterness, and self-loathing and instead let me dwell on Your goodness, faithfulness, and grace.
In Jesus’ Name, I pray.
Amen.

For Endurance When It Feels Hard
Heavenly Father,
I have been working so hard to lose weight for so long. I have tried to do all the things – diets, exercise programs, calorie counting, meal planning…it’s exhausting. I’m tired. I’m tired of trying so hard and not seeing the results I think should reflect my effort.
I can feel the enemy’s voice creeping into my thoughts telling me I’m not good enough…that I will fail this time like I always have before. That my efforts don’t matter and aren’t making a difference. I’m tired, discouraged, disheartened, disappointed, and feel like giving up.
But, today, right now, I am choosing to take those thoughts captive because those thoughts are not Your voice. Your Word tells me that my choices do matter and that You understand how tiring it can be to choose well day-in and day-out.
Scripture tells me the perseverance is a choice that You will use to continue to grow me and refine my character to be more like Yours. And You tell me again and again that my choices, little and big, do matter. They make a difference and it is worth the effort to keep putting one foot in front of the other.
Please continue to give me grace, strength, and patience as I do my best to imperfectly stumble along. Give me the strength to make the right choice, especially when I don’t feel like it. I trust that You will use it for good.
In Your Son’s name, I pray.
Amen.

Wisdom For The Next Small Change To Make
Lord,
there are so many diet programs out there. It feels daunting and overwhelming to try to know what the right one is for me. Please, help me to remember that there is not one miracle diet out there.
I know that making small changes consistently is the best way to lose weight but even that feels overwhelming when there are so many healthy choices out there to choose from.
Will You please show me my next step? Will You please give me wisdom to know the best next small change to make for my body, starting where I am right now? I’m sick of being a yo-yo dieter, going on and off of diets.
I want to make steady progress that will last me a lifetime. Show me how to do that, one small change at a time.
In Your Name, I pray,
Amen.

To Get Back On Track
Lord,
I’ve fallen off-track again. It feels like I’ve been here a thousand times before and, every time it happens, I feel like a failure. I feel like I’ve messed up so badly that I don’t even know how to get back on track.
But I know that’s not how You see me. You know I’m human and I will make mistakes. That’s why You sent Your Son to die for me – to take my sins as far away as the East is from the West.
I’m so sorry for making poor choices. I want to do better. I want to be a light, a way to show You and Your love, to everybody in my life. I want to use my healthy choices to glorify You.
Please, help me to accept Your grace, Your forgiveness, and get back on track with my healthy choices. Help me to stop beating myself up and show me my next step – the one thing I can do right now to get myself back on track.
Thank You for your unending patience and forgiveness. I didn’t earn it, I don’t deserve it, but I am so thankful. Let my good choices be a reflection of my heart overflowing with gratitude for Your goodness.
In Your Name, I pray,
Amen.

When You Are Paralyzed By A Fear Of Failure
God,
I am so scared of failing again. I feel like all I’ve done is fail when I try to stop overeating, start exercising, and make healthy choices. I can keep it going for a little while but then I end up messing up and right back at the beginning again.
That fear of failure makes me feel like it’s not even worth trying again. But I know my only two options are to give up or try again. And I know it’s the voice of the enemy whispering to me that I can’t do it, that I’m not good enough, that I’ll never be able to do this, and that it’s not even worth trying again.
Lord, protect me from the enemy’s lies and fill my thoughts with Your Truths – that I can do anything with Your strength, that stumbling is just a part of growing, that Your strength works best through my weakness, that You never give up on me.
Will You please help me to believe all of those Truths? Not just to know them by word but to believe them in my heart, as well. Remind me that my feelings are fickle and they don’t always tell me the Truth.
Remind me that I am doing this for a greater purpose – to be more like You – and that is a goal that will never go away. Help me just to take the next step right now.
You are the only One who can get me unstuck and overcome this fear that consumes me. I love You and I know that You are faithful.
In Jesus’ Name, I pray,
Amen.

Against Self-Sabotage
Lord,
why do I do this? Every time I start doing really well, making healthy choices and starting to lose weight, I do something to mess it all up. Why do I continue to self-sabotage?
I want to succeed so badly but I keep getting in my own way. I can’t do this on my own, God.
I don’t understand my thoughts or my choices and I hate that they don’t line up with my desires. I want to be able to get to my goal weight and honor You with my body and live more purposely with energy and good health to serve others…but then I decide overeating or binging is more important in the moment.
Please, help me fight against my selfish desires. Please, give me the strength to say no to temptation when food cravings scream in my mind that I “need” them so badly. God, I need Your strength because I feel like I’m at war with myself.
But You created me and You are a God of peace and hope and victory. I’m clinging to You with all of the strength that I have, knowing that You can help me overcome this, Lord.
I surrender my body, my thoughts, and my desires to You right now and ask that Your will be done and that my heart’s desires would align with Yours. I love You and trust that You will be able to help me break this cycle and move forward, drawing nearer to You every step of the way.
In Your Son’s precious name, I pray,
Amen.

For Replacing Lies With God’s Truth
God,
my thoughts are out of control. When I step on the scale and see that I’ve gained weight, I tell myself I’m a fat lazy slob. When I see myself in the mirror, I hate my body. When I try to exercise, I focus on how weak and slow I am. When food cravings hit, I tell myself I “need” that junk food. I know each and every one of those are lies.
Those thoughts do not reflect Your Word at all and I need to reign them in. Please, help me to notice when these lies start creeping in. They are so sneaky that I don’t even recognize them until it’s too late!
Set off an alarm in my mind so that I recognize them as lies the instant they go through my mind. And then, please, Lord, help me to take them captive and replace them with Your Truth.
Help me to know Your Word so well that I know exactly what You would say to me to contradict the enemy. Help me to recognize Your voice and intentionally seek it out, rejecting anything that doesn’t line up with Your character.
I love You and I choose to accept Your Truth to be my truth. I choose You to be my Savior, my God, and the center of my life.
In Jesus’ Name, I pray,
Amen.

For Food Freedom
Lord,
I didn’t realize it when I started overeating but, over the years, those few extra bites here and there turned into regular overeating and those small bad choices escalated to full-blown gluttony.
I am so sorry that I’ve made food an idol in my life. I’m so sorry that I’ve turned to food to fix things when You were right there waiting to help. I didn’t realize that I had built a chain, link by link, holding me in captivity to my food cravings, but I did. And now, I am aching for the freedom You offer.
Please, God, break these chains. Give me strength to overcome these cravings and have my soul pant only for You, not ice cream or french fries.
Show me how and where to set healthy boundaries for myself so that I can live in the true freedom You offer. Equip and empower me, one choice at a time, drawing me nearer to You every step of the way.
In Your Name I pray,
Amen.

On Accepting God’s Grace
Heavenly Father,
You are so good in every way. You have offered me grace upon grace and I’ve unintentionally turned You down more times than I can count because I felt so ashamed.
I let the enemy twist the healthy guilt You gave me to help guide my choices into shame that caused me to want to run and hide from You instead of confessing my sins and accepting Your grace. I want that to change starting now. I don’t want to hide anymore.
Whether I run from You or not, You’ve already seen every choice I make and You are a good, loving Father who just wants to guide me on the right path out of a deep love for me, not to deprive me of good.
I have sinned against You, Father, and I am so sorry. I desire to be right with You. I want to do better. Please, let Your grace wash over me, redeeming and transforming my every thought, feeling, and action.
I love You and am so grateful for your unending patience with me and the grace You continue to offer me.
In Jesus’ Name, I pray.
Amen.
