Use these 6 prayers for forgiveness from sins to help you overcome bitterness and experience more of God’s mercy with a heart of repentance.

God has given us access to a relationship with Him through the forgiveness of our sins. We can find forgiveness of sins not only for salvation, but for our daily sins and ask God to help us forgive others through prayer. If you’re looking for prayers to guide you as you’re seeking forgiveness from God or help to forgive others and yourself, I hope these prayers will serve as a guide.

The Bible speaks of forgiveness often because it is such a central point of Scripture. It is through Christ’s life and His sacrifice on the cross that we can find grace and forgiveness before God for our sins.

We serve a holy God. The reason we require forgiveness for our sins is that sin separates us from God. Through the forgiveness of our sins, we are cleansed from all unrighteousness and God justifies us. This means that He looks at us just as if we never sinned. Christ’s righteousness has been placed on us. What a mind-blowing reality we get to live in!

Even after we are saved, God’s word instructs us to continue to deny our flesh and to repent from our sins. As we grow in our faith and come to realize the overwhelming grace which God has given us, the more we will see the need and gift of repentance and forgiveness. The more we are able to extend that same forgiveness to others, and to ourselves, when necessary.

1. A Prayer of Forgiveness for Salvation

“That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.”

– Romans 10:9-10

Lord,

I am so thankful that You did not come for those who see no need for a physician, but you came for those who see their sin, and acknowledge their need for a Savior. Today, I confess my need for You. I know that my life wasn’t never meant to be my own. I know that I was never supposed to be the god of my own life.

My life belongs to You, Lord. And today I want to confess my sins and ask that You would save me from myself. Please help me to see the full weight of what Christ has done on the cross for me. The shame and suffering that He endured so that we can find forgiveness and peace with You. Thank You for Your mercy towards me.

I am amazed that I can even speak with You now, and find Your forgiveness available to me. Thank You for Your grace and kindness towards me. I ask that You would forgive me of all my sins, and that Christ would be the Lord of my life. Help me to grow in my faith and to be surrounded by others who will lead me in the way of truth. May my life going forward be lived for Your glory, and may my heart be responsive to Your word. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.

2. A Prayer to Forgive Someone Who Sinned Against You

“For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”

– Matthew 6:14-15

Father,

Thank You for extending Your undeserving grace and forgiveness towards me. It is a gift that I don’t ever want to take for granted. There was not a thing that I did to deserve Your forgiveness and mercy. It is only through Your grace and sacrificial love that I get to sit in Your presence. I ask that You grant me the ability to forgive those who have hurt me in the same way that You forgave me.

Your word says that even while we were sinners Christ died for us. There was nothing that I did, not any good work that bought me grace and forgiveness. Even as I rebelled in my sin, You extended Your grace and welcomed me to receive Your forgiveness and new life. In the same way, I ask that You would pour Your kindness into my heart, and help me to share it with others.

Not because they deserve it, or have asked for forgiveness, but because You have shown me forgiveness. Grant me peace towards them, and help me to see them through Your eyes, and not through my hurt. Help me to heal from the hurt, and to dwell inYour peace. In Jesus’ name, amen.

3. A Prayer For A Heart of Repentance

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

– 1 John 1:9

Lord Jesus,

You say that if I confess my sins, You are faithful and just to forgive me of my sins. Sometimes my sin misleads me, and makes me believe that I should hide and turn away from You in shame. But Your word says that there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ.

Though I sin, I am not left without hope, but my hope is found in Christ. He forgave me of my sins and has cleansed me from unrighteousness. Help me to remember that repentance is a grace that I get to partake in. Let me not run away, but rather turn to You when I have sinned, and seek Your forgiveness. Grant me a heart that truly feels sorrow over my sin, and a desire to turn away from sin.

Please strengthen me in times of temptation, and help me to lean on You instead of my own wisdom and understanding. Remind me that You will not turn me away when I confess my sins, but that You are merciful, and faithful to forgive me of my sins. May Your kindness lead me to repentance. In Jesus’ name, amen.

4. A Prayer for God’s Mercy

“Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.”

– Micah 7:18-19

Dear God,

There is truly no one like You. No one whose wisdom, power, love, kindness, and forgiveness compared to Yours. No one whose beauty exceeds Your beauty. And no one whose mercy can outdo Your mercy. Though You have every right to keep our sin against us, and to withhold

Your kindness from us, through Christ You poured out Your mercy on sinners like me. Thank You God for Your mercy. Thank You for not giving me what I deserve, and for giving me what I don’t deserve. Thank You that I get to experience Your new mercies each day.

Your anger is but more a moment but Your favor is for a lifetime, and I am so thankful that I get to experience Your favor. I ask that You would pardon my sin, Lord and have compassion on me. Help me to cling to Your mercy, and to be changed by it. In Jesus’ name, amen.

5. A Prayer for Any Bitterness

“Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

– Ephesians 4:31-32

Lord,

It’s hard not to hold onto the hurt that others have caused you. Right now I’m thinking of the pain that I have experienced through the sins of others. Though I may not always acknowledge it, I

can tell that I have harbored feelings of bitterness towards them. I know that You have called me to show forgiveness because I have been given forgiveness. But I confess that it is hard, Lord. It is hard to let go of it.

But I’m realizing that in many ways it is holding onto me. The hurt is clinging to me, and keeping me from true forgiveness and peace. Please help me to get rid of any bitterness or anger that I have toward them. Please give me wisdom as to how to deal with them, or to behave around them. May they see You through me, and not my flesh which desires to hold onto the pain.

Help me to truly forgive them, and to trust in You. Knowing that I don’t need to retaliate or hold it against them. Because You fight for me, and vengeance is Yours, not mine. Help me to submit to Your wisdom, and to live in Your peace. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.

6. A Prayer for Daily Forgiveness of Sins

“Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.” And you forgave the guilt of my sin.”

– Psalm 32:5

Lord,

Thank You for the gift of salvation. Thank You for taking my heart of stone and replacing it with a heart of flesh. A heart that can respond to the gospel, and that desires to please You. I confess that many times my heart seeks its own will. There are times when I follow my flesh, on a daily basis, and it leads me on a path of destruction. I know that salvation does not mean that I will no longer sin.

There is a whole process of sanctification that I will face as my flesh is at war with the Spirit. I ask that You forgive me of my sins today. Forgive me for the things that I thought about, said or did that were not honoring to You. Help me to get into the habit of confessing my sins daily, and to seek Your forgiveness. Help me to outgrow and overcome the current sins in my life. Help me to choose Your Spirit more and more and my flesh, less and less. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
