Pray these prayers for clarity & direction to seek God’s will in any area where you are feeling confused, overwhelmed, or divided.
Throughout our lives, we will find ourselves in times of confusion and indecision, left wondering which way to go or what choice to make. In those times all we need is clarity, and what better way to find clarity than to pray for it?
Scripture tells us in James 1:5, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” This verse applies to any situation that you may be needing guidance, clarification or wisdom as to what to do. I love how it says when we ask, He not only gives in small measure, but He gives generously.
If you’re not sure exactly how to ask, or where to begin, I hope that these prayers for clarity will help you to get started. But more than that, I hope that as you pray over these situations, God will give you direction, clarity, and confirmation where you need it most.
Prayers for Clarity
1. A Prayer for God to Direct Your Steps
“A person’s steps are directed by the Lord. How then can anyone understand their own way?”
– Proverbs 20:24
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being there for me when I need You. I know I can turn to You during this time. You know the full scope of my current situation. Even the parts that I am not aware of, You already know. That is why I am coming to You for clarity today. I don’t know which way to go.
When I read Your word I am reassured that it is not ultimately I who directs my path but it’s You. You direct a person’s steps. I ask that You direct my steps, and show me the way to go. Please grant me clarity for the decision in front of me, and help me to know what You are calling me to do. If a certain path is not Your will for me, I ask that You would close that door, and make it clear.
I don’t want to be paralyzed by indecision or fear. Instead, help me to trust You. Help me to rely on Your direction. Please give me peace if I am going in the right direction. More than anything, I want to be directed by You, and know that You are calling me on a certain path.
In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
2. A Prayer to Trust in Him
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
– Proverbs 3:5-6
Lord,
I confess there have been many times when I have leaned on my own understanding, or made decisions without seeking You. Even in those times You have been gracious toward me and have brought me back to the path of life.
Thank You for being so patient with me, and for the gift of this relationship that I have with You. Right now I am really in need of clarity. I’m not sure what to do, or which way to go. I know that You know all things, and that my tomorrow isn’t a mystery to You. I have no idea what the future holds but I know that You do, and that’s more than enough reason for me to trust You. Please help me to trust You, not only with my words but with all my heat.
Forgive me for leaning on my own understanding, and help me to lean on You instead. You not only know the way, but You are the way. Please help me to submit to You in all that I do. I ask that You straighten the path ahead of me, and show me what You want me to do.
In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
3. A Prayer for God To Go With You
“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”
– Isaiah 30:21
Dear God,
Everyday comes with new decisions that we get to make. Some decisions are harder than others, and today I especially need clarity for the decision in front of me. I don’t know which way to go, and what makes the most sense. I know what seems wise in man’s eyes may not always be what You deem wise, or what Your will is for us.
Please direct me in Your wisdom. Whether I turn left or right, may Your voice always be behind Him, instructing me and showing me the way to go. Show me which way to walk in, and help me to hear Your call.
In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
4. A Prayer for Wisdom
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.”
– James 1:5-8
Lord,
Today I really need Your wisdom. It’s way too easy to depend on my own wisdom sometimes, and for that I repent. I need guidance in the way that I should go, and over this decision that I am facing. Your word says that if I need wisdom, I should ask for it.
Today, I’m asking You for wisdom, please impart Your wisdom on me. Help me not to ask in doubt, but to ask in faith, knowing that You desire to give wisdom generously to all who ask for it. I don’t want to be like a wave that is tossed to and fro, but I want to believe and for my faith to be firmly rooted in You. Please help me not to be double minded, but to have my mind fixed on You, and my heart trusting in You. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
5. A Prayer to Commit The Situation To The Lord
“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.”
– Psalm 25:9
Father in Heaven,
I feel unsure about what to do right now. There’s a lot of uncertainty and I am in need of clarity. I know You alone can give me the clarity and security that I am seeking. Please help me to lay this situation down before You. Help me not to become anxious but instead to pray to You, and lean on You.
I surrender this situation to You. I know that You know the beginning from the end and that there is nothing that catches You off guard. Please help me to trust in You during this time. Help me to commit this situation to You, and everything else that I do. Please establish my plans, but most importantly, have Your will done in my life.
In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
6. A Prayer for God’s Counsel
“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.”
– Psalm 32:8
Lord,
As I seek Your direction, I ask that You will bring peace to my heart. Help me not to depend on my own feelings, or simply what my human eyes can see. But help me to seek Your will in this situation. What is it that You want me to do? Please grant me clarity, and make it clear to me. I ask that You would instruct me and teach me the way to go. Please help me to be teachable and to not only hear Your words but to act on them. Please keep Your eye on me always, and remind me that You are with me no matter what.
In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
7. A Prayer for God’s Protection
For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. He holds success in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones. Then you will understand what is right and just and fair – every good path.”
– Proverbs 2:6-9
Father,
Thank You for giving us Your word. It’s so easy to forget how privileged I am to have access to Your word each day. Your word that gives life and truth. At this moment, I am especially in need of Your wisdom. I know that wisdom comes from You, and You have knowledge of all things, as well as understanding. Please grant me wisdom to know what to do. Where I am lacking understanding, I ask that You would grant me understanding and make the way ahead of me clear.
Please help me to be that upright one that Your word speaks of, for whom You hold success in store. Please be a shield all around me. I ask that You guard my course and protect me on the way. Please grant me the understanding of that which is right and just and fair. Lead me on every good path, for Your name’s sake.
In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
