Are you hurting right now with grief or hardship? God can encourage you and give you comfort and peace when you pray. Here are four prayers for strength & comfort.

Whenever we are going through a tough time in life, whether that is due to the pressures of our responsibilities, the loss of a loved one, loneliness, or grief, it can feel as though we have been stripped from any strength.

It is often in those times when we realize our need for God’s strength, and that His comfort alone can soothe our hurting hearts, and fill us with the peace that we are missing.

If you are in need of strength and comfort today, turn to God who is an ever present help as Psalm 46:1-3 reminds us. “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth gives way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.”

Not only is God our strength in times of trouble, but when we are weary and filled with sorrow He is our strength, and comfort, as we read in Psalm 119:28. “My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to your word.”

Though our strength may fail, and our energy may come to an end, God never does. He has an endless amount of strength that He offers to those who trust in Him. When we rely on His strength, we don’t merely learn to walk but to soar like eagles.

If that is the kind of strength you need today, turn to God in humble prayer, and ask Him to lift you up in strength, and to comfort You in His love.

4 Prayers for Strength & Comfort

1. Prayer for Strength in Weariness

There comes a point in life where the pressures and burdens that we carry feel beyond what we can handle. Sometimes we need a reminder that we were never meant to carry it by ourselves, and that it is Christ’s strength that carries us through the journey of life.

If you are battling with weariness, seek Christ for His strength, and He will give you rest.

Father,

I am so weary, and burdened. I know that every day is a gift, but it has felt like I have grown to dread a new day and all of the pressures and responsibilities that come with it.

I am struggling to find the energy and motivation to push through. My own strength has failed me, please forgive me for trying to do it on my own, and counting on my own abilities.

I need You, Lord. I need Your word to be rooted in my heart and mind, that I might live in the hope of Christ, and find strength for the days ahead.

I need You to show me the way forward, and to grant me the grace to endure tough days. When I feel beat down and worn out, help me to find rest and fill me with Your strength.

Please help me to make wise use of my time, and to cut back on the things that aren’t beneficial for my health, and energy levels. Help me to focus when it is needed, and to persevere.

Please renew my strength. May I remember to look to You, because You are the one from whom my help comes from, and Your joy is my strength. In Jesus’ name, amen.

2. Prayer for Strength & Encouragement

It is hard to go through day after day when you feel downtrodden and defeated. Whether the responsibilities of life have been pressing hard on you, or the situation that you are facing has left you feeling hopeless, we can find encouragement and strength in God’s word, and through prayer.

Whatever you’re facing that has left you feeling defeated, bring it to God in prayer, asking Him to encourage your soul, and lift up your head.

Lord,

I feel so discouraged by life right now. It feels as though it is one thing after another, and I am having a hard time catching my breath, or catching a break.

These trials feel as though the heat has been turned up all the way, and I am struggling to find hope and strength as it continues. I know that trials are a part of life, and that they are not in vain.

It is one thing to know that on the surface, and another to truly live that out, because when you’re in it, all you want to do is get out. That’s where I am, Lord. All I want is to get out, and for it to come to an end.

Thank You for being with me, through the storms of life. Please remind me of Your presence in times when it feels dark and lonely, and help me to stretch my hand out to You.

Please help me not to go through this trial doubting Your goodness, or turning to other means to get through it. Help me to see the joy that James spoke of in my trial, and let it accomplish its perfecting work in me.

I know that when it is time, You will rescue me. Please fill me with strength, and encourage my weary heart. May I remember that there lies a day beyond every dark night. In Jesus’ name, amen.

3. Prayer to Endure Hardship

It’s no easy thing to endure. When you are going through a hard time, it is only a human instinct to want it to end as quickly as possible, with as little discomfort, and pain as possible. Although that would be preferred by most of us, hardships are not in vain, and they teach us a quality that is not easy to come by — endurance.

We are called to endure various times throughout scripture, enduring trials, running the race of faith with endurance, not giving up on doing good. All of this may seem impossible for us to do, but in and with Christ, He empowers us to do just that.

Lord,

I don’t know how to go on anymore. I feel as though every ounce of strength has been stripped away from me, and all I have left are bare bones, exposed to harsh conditions.

I can’t do this on my own, I know that, yet my flesh is so quick to turn to its own devices and understanding. Please help me to turn to You, at every moment.

This race isn’t something I can run in my own strength, it is only something that can be endured through faith in Christ, and relying on His strength to get me through it.

Please help me to fix my eyes on You, and to be purified through this hardship. Help me to endure, especially on days where I feel like giving up, and turning away.

Help me to run this race that You have set before me with endurance, knowing that it is not in vain when Christ is my reward. Remind me that this pain, and hardship will not last forever.

No matter what life throws my way, remind me of the reality that I have in Christ, who has already won the victory. In Him, I stand victorious and find my strength. In Jesus’ name, amen.

4. Prayer for Strength in the Midst of Grief

Though death is something that we all will experience, and many people before us have experienced, it doesn’t get any less painful, shocking and heart wrenching when someone we know and love passes away. There is a sense of “it shouldn’t be this way” that we all feel, because it truly shouldn’t. But sin has brought many companions along with it, including the gut wrenching sting of death.

As Christians, we have a hope in Christ that goes beyond this life, and that has won the victory over death.

Gracious God,

My heart is filled with grief at the loss of someone who I loved dearly. It doesn’t feel real, and it doesn’t feel right. I have so many questions, and I don’t know where to take them.

All I know with certainty is that You are sovereign. Please help me to trust Your heart, when it feels as though I can’t see Your hand at times. Death was never a part of Your plan, which is why it stings so much.

I don’t know how to go on without Your strength. Please carry me through this time of grief, and remind me that You are near to those with a broken heart

Thank You for being my comforter, and being an ever-present God in times of trouble. I need Your comfort now more than ever, and ask that You enfold me in Your arms.

Please help me to hold their memory near, and to focus my eyes on what truly matters, because death is a reminder that this is not our home, we’re merely travelers setting up camp.

May I find strength and comfort as time goes by, knowing that one day You will wipe away all these tears and put an end to the pain of this fallen world. In Jesus’ name, amen.
