1. A prayer of devotion
Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” Matthew 22:37
Lord, I pray that you would be the driving force, the central priority, the anchor of all my identity and life. I pray that you would help me to love you. Build in my heart a passion for You and for Your Word. Keep me as the apple of Your eye (Psalm 17:8). Unclutter my mind and heart of the worries of this world, and help me to build everything on Your solid, sure foundation. Help me not give myself to lesser loves, but instead to love others from an outpouring of the love You and I share.
You, Oh Lord, are the truest longing. So many entities lobby for my attention, for my heart. But nothing else satisfies for longer than a moment. There is an emptiness, a void that only You can fill. Deep down I know this to be true. An ache, a longing, a desire for meaning, a space that is ready to be cultivated and filled with the Holy Spirit. Lord, I invite you into that space. Take all of me, my best and my worst; Lord, take it all and breathe life and holiness into it. Make me a vessel, and fill my heart with love for you. Amen.

Lord, I know that many take the identity of Christian, but that’s not enough for me. I want my entire personhood to resound with loyalty and passion for You. Give me an overflowing heart, constantly in awe and wonder over Your character and accessibility to me. Lord, I come to You not because You need me, but because You want me. I come to You because I’m asking that You supply me with a heart that beats for You. I come to You because I am in need of You, and You so graciously want me close to Your heart. Lord, will you please increase my awareness of the Holy Spirit’s presence? So often I am spiritually sleep-walking: totally oblivious to the relief of You as my guide and protector. I feel on my own unaware of You. I feel pressured by the ever-increasing weight of this world. I want to get out of my limited and suffocating perspective and build my life with You, on You, in You, for You, and by You.
Life feels crushing, Lord. The stranglehold of responsibility, striving, achieving, etc. Let it all BREAK, Lord Jesus, upon the sure foundation of Your faithfulness. I cannot find this freedom of relief unless You enlighten my spirit to see it. Lord, won’t You do it? Lord, will you let the scales fall off my eyes and let me be awakened to Your movement in my life? You are my victorious Champion, Lord Jesus; I invite You to come and reign on the throne of my heart both now and forevermore. Amen.
