As a mom, you may only have a moment in your busy day for a short prayer asking for God’s guidance, peace, strength, and patience. These four short prayers for mothers are perfect when you need encouragement from the Lord.
It may be hard to find long stretches of uninterrupted time to pray. If you’ve had a long sleepless night, waking up early may not be an option because of the busy day that lies ahead.
It is easy to get so overwhelmed by the daily things that you need to do, that you forget that you don’t have to do it all in your own strength, wisdom, and abilities.
For mothers who are struggling with weariness, Jesus says in Matthew 11:28-30, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Though motherhood is an absolute blessing, it is no secret that it is also challenging, and does not come with a complete, step-by-step blueprint. Yet, in figuring out, in trial and error, in the tears, yawns, laughter, and love, you can find God’s comfort and His rest.
If you’re a weary mom who is struggling to get some time in the day to spend with God in prayer, these short prayers are here to help you on those days when you are in need of strength and encouragement from the Lord.
4 Short Prayers for Mothers
1. Prayer for Anxious Mothers
When you have a little one, who you love dearly, and cherish deeply, it inevitably comes with the instinctive need to protect them from any harm. As a mother, you may feel daily anxiety over the safety of your children.
Whether they are safe as they sleep through the night, or as they begin to walk and climb on things by themselves. You may feel anxious about them going to school, or what is influencing them.
But that anxiety is not only limited to the well-being of your children. You may feel anxious about the many tasks that you still need to carry out, or the little amount of time there seems to be in a day.
Maybe you’re anxious about the daily needs of you and your family. Wherever you are, Christ’s peace meets you there.
Lord,
I am in desperate need of Your peace. Every day I wake up with an overwhelming feeling of anxiety, and I can’t seem to get rid of it. I worry about so many things, and it feels as though my plate is filled to the brim.
It’s hard to find even a moment of quiet and to sit before You in silence. When my kids are sleeping, my mind instantly jumps to other things that I need to do or accomplish at that time.
I forget that I need time for my soul to be fed, and to be nourished by You. Please forgive me for the many tasks that I have prioritized before You.
Help me to remember that I need You and that You are simply a prayer away. When I am struggling, or I feel overcome with stress, remind me that You are with me and that I can call out to You.
Help me trust You with my children’s lives. Help me to give up the anxieties that have controlled me, and have kept me from seeking and living in Your peace. In Jesus’ name, amen.
2. Prayer for Patience
It’s no secret that raising children requires a lot of patience, more than most of us can muster on our own. When you’ve repeated yourself for the hundredth time, or your child is having a meltdown, it can be easy to grow impatient, frustrated, and angry.
What’s not easy is to bear with them in patience and longsuffering. The good news is that scripture calls us to grow in patience with one another, which includes our children. But it is not patience that we conjure up from our own strength.
It is patience that requires our reliance on the Lord. We can ask God through prayer to increase our patience and fill us with grace toward our children in times of frustration.
Father,
On days like today, I am reminded of Your patience with us. Over and over in the Bible, we see the same pattern. We fail you, but You remain faithful. We sin and You show us mercy. We turn our back on You, and You call us back to You.
I don’t know where I or any of us would be if it weren’t for Your loving patience toward us. Sometimes I feel so frustrated with my children, and having to repeat myself so many times a day, I forget the grace and patience that You give me when I am the same.
Please help me to extend grace to my children when I feel frustrated or tired. Help me to grow in patience, and to be an example to them. Help me to know when I need to take a moment to breathe and respond in patience and not react with impatience. In Jesus’ name, amen.
3. Prayer for Weary Mothers
One of the things that all mothers often face when raising little ones is weariness. Whether you have a newborn, toddler, or teenager, each stage of life comes with its own challenges and blessings.
Those who are in the newborn stage may feel especially overwhelmed as they learn about their baby, and your baby gets to know you and their new environment. If you have a toddler, you may be running up and down, and struggling to keep up with their ample energy.
If you have a teenager, it is like they are all together trying to figure out who they are, and so are you. If you’re the mom who feels weary and overwhelmed today, you’re not alone.
Heavenly Father,
Today I am in need of Your strength. Though I am so grateful for the gift of motherhood, and the precious life that You have given me, it has not been an easy task.
I know that motherhood is often trial and error and that it requires a lot, if not all, of our time and affection at times. Thank You for the opportunity to love my children, and to lead them to You.
It gets hard to take care of myself. Sometimes it’s easy to forget that I need You through every part of my day. When I wake up from a long night or never get any sleep at all. When I feel discouraged or overwhelmed.
Help me to remember that I can turn to You through every feeling, every thought, and every activity. When I feel weary and don’t know how I’m going to make it through, please fill me with hope, and empower me with Your strength.
Please lift my weary head, and fill me with strength and confidence. Help me to renew my mind, and refresh my soul in Your presence. Carry me through each day, and sustain me, Lord. In Jesus’ name, amen.
4. Prayer for Wisdom in Parenting
As soon as you fall pregnant, there is an overflow of advice that comes your way about parenthood, sleep training, breastfeeding, discipline, and so much more.
Whether you’re a new mom, or you have gone through pregnancy, birth, and raising a child, it is easy to get overwhelmed with all of the information that is thrown at you.
Though a lot of advice is useful, it is also important to remember to ask God’s wisdom as a parent, and for the decisions that need to be made in relation to your children. He provides wisdom beyond our human understanding and leads us in the way.
Lord,
There are so many books, videos, opinions, and instructions on parenting out there. It can be hard to know which way is the right way, or rather the best way for each child.
Sometimes I feel overwhelmed with all the different things that I have to consider and think of as a mother. Even when I am not actively doing anything, it’s as though my mind never quite gets to rest.
I know the world has its ways and wisdom, and that is something that I need to guard my children against. I know I cannot always guard them, but while I am able to teach them and guide them, I ask that You would grant me wisdom.
Please give me wisdom on how to bring up my children. Help me to point them to You, and to show them what it looks like to lean on You. Help me tune out advice that is not needed, and to hold onto what is wise and helpful.
Help me to take it one day at a time, and not to expect perfection from myself or my children. I am learning, just as they are, remind me of this truth, and guide me in Your endless wisdom. In Jesus’ name, amen.
