Use these prayers for your mental health to ask God for help, comfort, and relief in your struggle with depression, anxiety, PTSD, and more.
It is so easy as humans to forget that we can pray over our mental health. We tend to separate ourselves into fractions: Spiritual life, mental life, emotional life, etc.
We can easily forget that we are a whole person, designed by God and made in His image.
The heart of God is for all of us, not just one part of who we are, but everything–including our mental health. If you are struggling with mental health, panic attacks, PTSD, OCD, anxiety, etc. turn to the Lord with Your burden.
It is too much for you, dear one, to carry on your own.
If someone you love is struggling, love them through prayer and presence as you look to the Lord to be Your strength. He is so tender to bend toward us and listen. (Psalm 116:2)
9 Prayers For Your Mental Health
1. Short Prayer For Your Mental Health
What a good God we serve. He has created galaxies, mountains, and oceans, yet deeply cares for us, and desires to reign as Lord over our thoughts.
“The mind of man plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.” Proverbs 16:9
Dear Lord,
Will You help me with my mental health? Guide me and increase my faith.
Oh, Lord, how the world rages against my peace, and overwhelms me with racket in my thoughts. Jesus, will You calm me and order my thinking to appropriately reflect Your Kingship in my life? I give You all authority over my plans and thoughts.
I know there is no safer place for me than in the will of God, please give me the power to reflect this truth in all that I think about.
In Your Holy Name,
Amen.
2. A Prayer For Relief From Your Depression
Precious one, there is life for you beyond this season of sadness. May the Lord show you his great love for you, and allow you to inhale hope as you pray these prayers.
“Why art thou cast down, O my Soul? And why art thou disquieted in me? Hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.” Psalm 42:5
Oh, Lord!
This deep, heavy gloom has been imprisoning me for far too long. Father, I do not like this, I am miserable and I’m begging You to shine light over me. Set me free in the Name of Jesus!
I need You to lift my chin. I need You to give me hope, I need something to look forward to and an Anchor for my soul. This hollowness inside of me is eating me up, give me Your sweet and glorious presence in this space instead of this emptiness, and fill me with the assurance that You love me. Oh, how I need You, Lord, nothing else will do.
In the Powerful and Delivering Name of Jesus Christ, I pray,
Amen.
3. A Prayer For Comforting Your Anxiety
Anxiety often feels like a runaway train that we cannot stop. It is a swirling of unproductive nervousness inhibiting so much. If you or someone you love is struggling with anxiety, may you find solace and reprieve in and through prayer to our mighty God.
“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:7
Lord,
What is this tightness in my chest, this shortness of breath, and the constant knot in my stomach? Oh, God! This is no way to live. I need Your comfort. Soothe my nervous system and my thoughts and every part of me that causes me to feel on edge.
Lord, You have been upholding Your people for thousands of years, and I know that Your mighty, loving hand holds my life now. All my worries and nagging thoughts I also hand to You.
I open my hands in my lap right now as a symbol not only of releasing my cares to You, but also for You to exchange my angst for comfort. Will you receive my concerns as prayers, and transform my worry and anxiety into prayerfulness? You, oh Lord, are my Peace.
In Jesus Powerful Name,
Amen.
4. A Prayer For God’s Guidance On Your Treatment
Believers often ask God for wisdom for surgeons, however, it’s easy to forget that we can make this same request for our mental health treatment. Every aspect of our lives belongs to the Lord, and we’d be remiss to forget to invite Him to guide us in our treatment.
He has invited us to make Him King over every element of our lives. “Love the Lord Your God with all Your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind, and with all your strength.” Mark 12:30
Lord,
I thank You for the resource that Your grace has provided in getting some treatment. Gracious God, I want to take a stand in this pivotal moment and commit my treatment to You. What healing is there apart from You, Lord? You hold the world in Your hands.
Please allow my spirit, mind, and body to reach whole healing–for Your sake and for Your glory, remember me, Lord. Please give my therapist/doctor wisdom as they assess the uniqueness and intricacies of my trauma and symptoms.
Sharpen my awareness as well as that of my advisor. Lead us, Lord, in how to best care for my mind and wholeness. You are the Great Physician (Mark 2:17), and I am Yours, Jesus.
In Your Name, I pray,
Amen.
5. A Prayer For Managing PTSD
Beloved believer, the trauma you carry is seen by the Lord. You are not expected to manage your agony in isolation, tidily, and without signs of pain. Your trauma may whisper otherwise to you, but this suffering is not where you belong forever.
Pain is not your home – may God give you the bravery to pray and believe the following prayer.
“You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day” Psalm 91:5
God of the Universe,
Only You and I truly know the pain that rules inside of me from the past. Lord, the wound has grown and is infected and out of control; constantly threatening me by demanding I relive the experience. Oh, Lord! Deliver me! Heal my mind and memory.
I know I will not forget, but would You remove it from the constant thought replaying in my mind? My trauma constantly steals the potential joy of my today’s.
God, You hold time in Your hands and You have brought the dead to live again; because of this, I know that You can deliver me from the wreckage the past delivered up. Breathe new life into me, and set me free.
Thank You God, that You are not only powerful enough to deliver me, but You are kind enough to hold me when I hurt. I’m crying out for the tenderness of the Holy Spirit to come over me now. Heal me Lord.
In the Delivering Name of Jesus, I pray,
Amen.
6. A Prayer Against The Shame Of Mental Illness
We all know all too well the familiar shame of not measuring up to the goal we had for ourselves. The disappointment can create a lot of loud interior noise, condemning us with shame and condemnation. But, this was never how Jesus spoke to the heavy-hearted.
His compassion was on display with each interaction with a person who felt despair. (For an example see Luke 7:36-50) The beautiful thing about Jesus is He meets us right where we are, and lifts our chin.
If you are struggling with shame today while fighting for your mental health, take a second for a deep breath and a reminder of how good and kind our Jesus really is. You don’t have to carry the pressure of the world, lay it down in surrendering prayer, and be lifted up by his kindness.
“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,” Romans 8:1
Oh Lord,
How I wish my mental health wasn’t such a battle. Lord, if I am honest, I so often feel shamed by this struggle. Oh, Lord, won’t You meet me here? Please remind me of Your kindness and wrap me in security as I read Your Word and pray right now.
You are worthy of all of it Lord, and I will trust You through this dark valley. Guard my impressionable heart from shame associated with mental illness. I know that shame is not a tool from Your tool chest, and it’s certainly not how You disciple Your children.
Give me the power and authority to throw shame off, Lord. When I feel the whisper of shame, help me identify that I am being tempted. Will I listen to the shame, or will I listen to You? I choose You, Lord. Help me every day. Thank You, precious Jesus, that there is now no condemnation for Your own.
In Jesus Name, I pray,
Amen.
7. A Prayer For A Strong Support System
Believers and unbelievers alike agree that a strong support system is a crucial key to an abundant life. God made us to need one another, and live in community. In fact, early on in the Garden of Eden, regarding Adam being alone God said: “It is not good that man should be alone” Genesis 2:18.
A desire for a support system is a godly and appropriate desire. Strong bonds with healthy people will do wonders for our mental health. We were made for each other.
“Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” Ephesians 4:3
God,
I thank You for the progress I am making with You toward my mental health. Father, I am feeling the need for a stronger support system. Lord, I desire the richness of true community with others who also love You. I want to be encouraged, and I also want to be a contributor to others.
Will You provide a strong support system for me, Lord? Lead me in how to seek this out. Church? Bible Study?
Lord, where would I look to take steps toward being a part of a healthy community? Please show me, Father, and use this for my continued growth in my walk with You. May You always be glorified in my life.
In Jesus Name,
Amen.
8. A Prayer For Healing
One of the hardest and most vulnerable pieces of growth is waiting for healing. If You are in a season of longing for healing, don’t try to do it alone. Accept the invitation to pray. The Lord loves to hear our prayers, and oh, how it can encourage us!
Today if You find Yourself in need of healing from the Lord, say Your longings out loud to Him in prayer.
“Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise.” Jeremiah 17:14
Healing Jesus,
I come to You now in need of Your healing. I know that You can do anything You want, and I am suffering and in need. Lord, You know of my struggle, and you are not blind to how long I have been hurting.
Oh, Lord, lay Your hand on me and heal me. I long to give You all the praise for my healing. Fill me with hope and endurance, and let my life resound with Your praises.
In Jesus’ healing Name, I pray,
Amen.
9. A Prayer For Hope
When you are struggling with mental health, hope can feel like slippery water in cupped hands. The Bible has much to say about hope, even calling it an “anchor for the soul.” Scripture also says that “hope deferred makes the heart sick” (Proverbs 13:12).
Reading these verses, is it any wonder that feeling separated from hope would enlarge mental illness?
Child of God, if you feel far from hope today, and you look around and feel lost, may the hope of God find you today. Let His love wash over You and ask Him for nearness that would overflow with hope. You are deeply loved.
“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure…” Hebrews 6:19
Abba Father,
Today I come into prayer feeling like I’m hanging by a thread, yet I am asking You for hope like an anchor in my soul. Oh, Lord, where will I be apart from Your answer? I am coming to You in full dependence, only You can breathe life into my weary soul.
You are Creator, You are sustainer, You are Master of salvation, and I know that I am safe in Your hands. Lord, provide for me.
Father, give me what I need to be refreshed with cleansing, enlightening, beautiful hope. Not a “hope” like a wish, but a deep assurance in my bones that You. Will. Be. Faithful to me, and to this world that You lovingly created. I am so hungry for Your pure hope to fill me.
In the gorgeous, redeeming, powerful, Name of Jesus, I pray,
Amen.
