There are many ways that we as parents can care for, protect and look after our children. But one of the best possible ways to do so is through praying for them.

When we pray for our children, we are committing them to God, and we acknowledge that He is ultimately the one who steers their lives and has the ability to transform them into Christlike people.

If you’re looking for ideas on how you can pray for your children, here are a few to get you started!

1. Prayer for their Gifts and Talents

“There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.” – 1 Corinthians 12:4-5

We serve a God who is infinitely creative, and He has shared that creativity with all people by giving us gifts. These can be those things that we are instinctively drawn to and good at, or those things that we have learned to do and gotten better at.

God has given your child a child and there is no greater use of that gift than to honor God with it. When it comes to a church setting especially, the Bible outlines different spiritual gifts that the Holy Spirit gives.

It is important to pray that God would use your child and their gifts for His kingdom, and that they will use it to serve others well, even from a young age.

Dear Lord,

I thank You for blessing me with my child. You have made them on purpose and given them a unique personality and gifts. Thank You for making only one of them.

Please help me as a part to nurture their strengths and help them to grow in areas where they need assistance. I know You have made us all to reflect Your glory, and I pray that You would use my child’s gifts to display Your glory. May they grow to serve those around them and especially Your church.

Help them to grow in their gifts and to seek to honor You in the way they use them. In Jesus’ name, amen.

2. Prayer for their Friendships

“The righteous choose their friends carefully, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.” – Proverbs 12:16

Those who we surround ourselves with have the ability to influence us immensely. This applies to both positive and negative influences. It doesn’t matter how old we are, we all are susceptible to being influenced. But when we are younger, we are especially easily influenced.

This is why peer pressure is such a weighty topic when it comes to school going children. Because children are a lot more bendable when they are young, it is important to pray for the right friends and influences in their lives. It would be careless for us to think that the friendships they have are of little effect on them.

But we can ask God to not only bring godly influences in their lives but that they would be good and godly friends to others too.

Father,

Thank You for the gift of friendship. I know that You have created true godly friendship to be encouraging and to do life together beyond the surface.

There is nothing more that I desire than for my children to be able to find friends who love You, and who will draw them closer to You. I know all it takes is meeting the wrong person to affect your life in a negative way.

I ask that You protect my children from people who seek their harm and whose intentions are wrong. Please grant my children discernment when it comes to choosing who they will spend time with, and help them to choose their friends wisely.

May they develop friendships that build both of them up, that keep them accountable and that better their lives. In Jesus’ name, amen.

3. Prayer to Grow in Wisdom

“Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you. Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.” – Proverbs 4:6-7

Whenever we think of wisdom, it is always the thing that is associated with age. Though age and experience does bring wisdom. The Bible also refers to a different kind of wisdom that does not apply to a certain age.

This wisdom is a godly wisdom that takes the word of God and its instructions and applies it to daily life. As parents we all desire to see our children make wise decisions. It is our responsibility to point them to God’s word and to help them understand what it says and show them how it applies to their lives.

We can do this with our children, and allow God’s wisdom to grow in their lives.

Lord,

I am grateful for Your wisdom and understanding. Your word says that Your ways are not our ways and neither are Your thoughts our thoughts.

I ask that You would allow my children’s thoughts to be transformed by Your word, instead of being confirmed to the world. The world and media have its own patterns of thinking and ways of being, that mostly are a rejection of Your word and commands.

I ask that You would give my children a heart for Your word, and that they would reject the wisdom of the world. Please help them to grow in their knowledge of Your word, and to grow in wisdom.

May they apply the word to their daily lives, and reap the fruit of a life that is down on the word. In Jesus’ name, amen.

4. Prayer for Protection

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” – Deuteronomy 31:6

Every loving parent desires to see their children safe. Whether that is safe from physical harm as they leave home and return. Whether that’s protected from the hurt and disappointment of the world, heartbreak, or broken relationships. Or whether that is spiritually, from the temptations of the enemy and the world around them.

Admittedly, we can only protect our children to an extent. But we can lean on God who is able to go with them wherever they go, and who is able to protect them against the attacks of the enemy. It is important not only to pray for your children’s physical safety, but also for their mental and spiritual protection.

Father in Heaven,

There is no one like You in all the earth. No person can compare to You, or defend themselves against You. Yet, You are a fortress and hiding place for all those who place their trust in You. Today, I ask that You would be a fortress for my children.

Wherever they go, I ask that You go before them. Remind them that they don’t need to be afraid because Your word says You will never leave nor forsake them.

I ask that You would clothe them in Your armor. Please protect them from the schemes of the enemy and the fiery darts that he tries to aim at them.

Keep their minds and hearts guarded from the lies of the enemy and from the perversion of this world. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.

5. Prayer for their Faith

“And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.” – Hebrews 11:6

The Bible often speaks in the New Testament of a childlike faith that we should possess. Children often teach us more things than we realize, like faith, because of their trusting nature.

God calls us to trust Him in that same way. Sometimes we may think our children are too young to understand the gospel and what faith is, but they learn from us even when we don’t realize. No matter how old or young your child is, you can ask God to work in their hearts.

Ask Him to make the gospel come alive in their hearts, and that they would repent from their sins and live for Him alone.

Lord,

Thank You so much for the gift of faith. Your word says that it is only by grace through faith that we are saved. There is not a work that we can do to save ourselves or to ensure our own salvation.

It is all because of Christ’s work on the cross that faith and salvation are at all possible. Knowing this, my prayer is that You would protect my children from the grasp of the world and the enemy.

I ask that You would bless them with Your gift of grace, allowing their hearts to receive the gospel with gladness. May they be Your willing servants and live their lives only for an audience of one.

May they grow a personal relationship with You that is real and that changes their whole lives. Please grow them in their faith, and make them a blessing to others. In Jesus’ name, amen.
