Use these prayers for a wedding to bless the new bride and groom with love, wisdom, encouragement, & guidance on their wedding day.

The coming together of two people who love God and love one another is a joyous occasion. Going from being one person to two who have become one is a beautiful transition, but it comes with unknown territory. More than ever, married couples need encouragement and support as they build a life together that reflects the love of Christ.

John Piper said it perfectly, when he said, “Staying married, therefore, is not mainly about staying in love. It is about keeping a covenant. Till death do us part” or “As long as we both shall live” is a sacred covenant promise – the same kind Jesus made with His bride when He died for her.

So, it is wonderful celebrating with a couple on their wedding day, but it is even more meaningful to cheer them on for the years of marriage that lie ahead. One of the best ways you can do this is through praying for the couple and their future marriage.

If you’re looking for a heartfelt wedding prayer that you can include in a wedding card, write in a note or say to the beautiful couple, here are a few ideas for you!

Prayers for Wedding Based On Scripture

1. A Wedding Prayer for Unity

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”

– Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

Lord,

You have created marriage to be a shadow of the beautiful marriage between Christ and the church. Thank you for bringing [bride] and [groom] together to become partakers of this precious gift of marriage. I pray that You will become the foundation of all they do in their marriage.

May they become one in heart and in mind. I pray that they will know that their strength lies in standing together. Your Word says that a house divided against itself cannot stand. Please make them a unified home. Help them be each others‘ greatest cheerleaders and most valued listeners.

May their marriage be a reflection of the love between Christ and His bride. May they keep one another warm, help one another up and cheer one another on.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

2. A Prayer for Commitment (to one another) be a model of it

“So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

– Matthew 19:6

Father,

It is with great pleasure that we witness [groom] and [bride] tie the knot today. Long before they were even born you created them with a plan in mind. Thank You for how You have brought them together as two who are becoming one.

They are no longer two, but in You are unified. I pray that nothing will come between them, or tear them apart. I pray that Your love and kindness will follow after them, all the days of their lives.

May their marriage be a blessing to those who cross their path. And may their hearts and mission align with one another, but may it ultimately align with Yours.

It’s In Your Name, I pray, amen.

3. A Prayer To Display Love

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.”

– Corinthians 13:4-8

Lord,

You have not only given us a roadmap to what true love looks like, but You have given us Your Son to live it out before us. Thank You for the beautiful picture of love that Christ is to us. My prayer is that You would allow that extraordinary, self-sacrifice love that Jesus demonstrated, to reign in the lives of [groom] and [bride].

I pray that their eyes would be set on serving one another’s needs before their own. I pray that they will show one another patience in times of frustration. Help them to live in humility with one another. Keep them from being self-seeking or dishonouring one another in their words and deeds.

Let their love delight in truth instead of evil. May they protect one another, grow in trust, hope and perseverance. May their love never fail because it is founded on You. May it be a reflection of true, godly love for the world around them.

In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.

4. Praying For The Pillars of Their Marriage

“And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”

– 1 Corinthians 13:13

Father,

Thank You for the love that [groom] and [bride] get to share with one another. Their union is a beautiful testimony of Your grace and love. My hope for them is that they will continue to build the foundation of their marriage on You. I pray that their relationship would be built on the pillars of faith, hope and love.

May they grow in their faith as individuals, and spur one another on as they serve You together. I pray that their faith will be an encouragement to other couples. May they never despair, but always look to You for the hope that is in Christ. May that hope keep them through every season of their lives together.

Lastly, I pray that love would abound between them. Not the fickle kind of love of the world, but the kind of love that led Jesus to the cross. May their love seek one another’s best interest and seek to glorify You.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

6. A Prayer To Love

Father, your greatest command was to love You and love each other. You’ve given marriage as a holy relationship that reflects our relationship with You. Show us how to follow your example and set aside our selfishness and pride and humbly serve each other. Help us to be of one spirit and of one mind and value each other above ourselves, looking out for each other’s interests. In the midst of our busy lives, help us take time to love each other deeply from the heart, as you have loved us. May the love we have for each other be an example to the world of how You love them and gave Your life for them.

7. We Thank You

“Lord, behold our family here assembled.
We thank you for this place in which we dwell,
for the love that unites us,
for the peace accorded us this day,
for the hope with which we expect the morrow, for the health, the work, the food,
and the bright skies that make our lives delightful; for our friends in all parts of the earth.
Amen”

8. A Prayer of Thanksgiving to God

Dear God,

We praise you for your love and faithfulness. We thank you for huge grace. We thank you that you give us the power to love well. Thank you for my spouse. Thank you for the gift of marriage. Thank you that you’re for us; that you fight for us. Thank you that you are Redeemer, and you have good in store. We confess, some days, marriage gets tough, and we blow it – again. We ask that you would make us more like you. Please fill our marriage and lives with truth and cover it with blessing.

Amen.

9. A Prayer For Mutual Understanding

Dear Heavenly Father,

We pray for a deeper understanding of each other. We’ve been together for a while, but we’re two different people who do things in two different ways. And so we ask that You’d give us the strength to be flexible when we need to be, and give us the patience to handle our emotions wisely.

Help us to be good listeners who are sensitive to the needs of each other.

May our differences sharpen each other to grow stronger in faith, and challenge each other to consider new things.

Bind us together in unity, and use our differences to strengthen that bond. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.
