Our families will experience many challenges and in some instances, we will find ourselves needing to pray for physical, emotional, and relational health.
If you have a family member who is ill or has been hospitalized, you are not alone. Don’t be discouraged because God is only a prayer away.
If your family is going through broken relationships or unhealthy communication, don’t be dismayed, because God is able to work in our hearts and bring about restoration in our families.
6 Prayers for Healing Family
1. Prayer to Cure Sickness
It can be very tough to see someone you love go through illness. One of the best ways that we can support our loved ones, other than being there for them physically and emotionally, is through prayer. Even when it feels like we have exhausted our human capabilities for a cure, we can continue to pray for God to heal our loved ones, knowing that He is able.
Father,
I just want to take a moment to thank You for the lives of my loved ones. Thank You for placing them in my life, and for giving us the gift of being family. It is a treasure that I am eternally grateful for.
I know that You are aware of the health struggles that my loved one is currently facing. It has been so tough to see them endure this illness. I know that I can only do so much to help, and that You alone can bring them to full restoration.
My prayer is that You would empower them with Your strength today. In areas where they are struggling, please lift them up and give them energy. Please grant the doctors wisdom in how to handle this illness, and to make it manageable for them.
I know that no illness is too severe for you to heal, and that Your wisdom and abilities reach far beyond any human understanding. If it’s in Your will, I ask that You would cure my loved one of this illness, and restore their health. In Jesus’ name, amen.
2. Prayer to Heal Pain
Because we live in a broken world, we often find ourselves and those we love suffering from many ailments, pains and illnesses due to the fallen world that we are in. One of those struggles in particular is living with pain, whether that is emotional, or physical pain. It can be hard to live day to day when you struggle with pain. If your loved one has issues with pain, ask God to ease their pain, and help them to manage it.
Lord,
My heart hurts seeing someone who I care about suffer in pain. Sometimes I wish I was able to take it away, or even lessen it for them. But I know that You see them, and that You are able to take their pain away, or help them to manage it.
I ask that You would give them new strength each day that helps them to power through the pain that they are experiencing. Please help them to know when to rest, and to give their body the time and care that it needs.
Please help those around them to be understanding, sensitive and helpful towards them and the pain that they’re experiencing. I ask that You would ease their pain, and help them fix their eyes on You.
Lord, even if the pain never ends on this side of eternity, I ask that You would be a comfort, hope and source of strength to them. May they trust You, and lean on You every step of the way, in health and in pain. In Jesus’ name, amen.
3. Prayer for Hospitalized Loved One
It’s scary when a family member gets hospitalized. Sometimes people find themselves in the hospital due to an accident, a seizure, sudden pain, or an illness that has worsened, to name a few things. No matter the circumstances, we all anxiously await having our loved one cleared to come home and to recover from what they were experiencing. If you currently have a loved one in the hospital, this prayer is for you.
Father in Heaven,
I feel so anxious for my loved one who has been hospitalized. It’s so easy to take our health for granted at times, and forget that any day things can take a turn, or we or someone we care about can find ourselves in a troubling situation.
My greatest prayer is that You would be with my loved one right where they are at this moment. If there is any anxiety in them, I ask that You would fill them with an overwhelming sense of Your peace and assurance.
Please give guidance to the doctors and nurses who will be helping and screening them as well. I ask that You bless them with wisdom, and help them to see the root of what is causing this hospitalization. Please remove anything that could distract them.
I ask that You provide the remedy for this problem, and bring my loved one home safely. Please embrace them and comfort them, and help them to know that they are not alone because You are with them. In Jesus’ name, amen.
4. Prayer to Heal Unhealthy Communication
As people, we all have things we struggle with. When it comes to family, and our relationship with one another, just like any other relationship, communication is key. Communication is something that requires effort, and families can easily fall into a habit of unhealthy communication that leads to division, gossip, bitterness, pride, and misunderstandings.
Lord,
My family needs You desperately. We need You in every area of our lives, but right now, we especially need Your hand in our relationships and communication with one another.
There are so many things that have gone unsaid, and so many things that were said harshly, or without healthy communication. There have been hurtful words, unspoken apologies, and everything in between.
My only desire is to see my family come together peacefully and forgive one another in humility. Please help us to confess our wrongdoing, and to be quick to forgive, rather than keeping grudges between ourselves. Help us to see our own blind posts, rather than looking for faults in one another.
Help us to view one another as people who are not only our family but who were made in Your image, just as we are. Please help us to grow in our communication, and to develop ways of sharing that are healthy and helpful. In Jesus’ name, amen.
5. Prayer to Heal Broken Family Relationships
Though our hope is never for our families to be broken and torn apart, this is a reality that many families often face for various reasons. It can be tough to endure broken family relationships, and it takes commitment from all sides to restore relationships. Sometimes someone may desire to mend the relationship but others may not feel the same. In those times we can ask God to help us restore our family relationships and to give us peace with how it plays out.
Lord,
I come to You with a heavy burden on my heart. I know that You have placed our family together and that nothing You do is in vain. More than ever, my family is in need of restoration, and unity.
There is a lot of hurt between us, and it feels as though a wedge has been drawn. There have been many ups and downs, and it hasn’t been easy, but harmony and healing is what I know each of our hearts needs.
In our own effort and understanding, I know we will fail. That is why I am calling on You, Lord. Please soften our hearts and help us to seek healing in our family relationships. Help us to take responsibility, and to do our part in bettering our relationships.
Please remove the barriers between us, and help us to forgive one another and to look to You for hope and healing. In Jesus’ name, amen.
6. Prayer for Elderly Family Member’s Health
It is a blessing to have those we love in our lives, especially as they grow older. Whether that is our parents, grandparents or great-grandparents, as we age, our health often declines and we are liable to various health issues or struggles. If you have elderly family members who are struggling with their health, you can keep them close in prayer and ask God to carry them through these latter years of their lives.
Gracious God,
Thank You for blessing my life with my [parents/grandparents]. Thank You for the years that You have carried them through, and for allowing them to experience the gift of life all these decades later. I know how fragile life is, and how fortunate I am to have them.
My prayer is that You would shine Your glorious light on them each day, and give them the hope and strength that they need to make it through the day.
Please help them to rely on You, especially in times when their own strength has grown weary. May they not only feel renewed physically but renew them in their minds as they seek Your Word, and trust in You.
Help them to know You more, and to hold onto the hope that this world is not their ultimate home. Please help them manage the pain and illnesses that they are experiencing, and bring healing to their bones.
I ask that You would extend Your grace to them, and help them to accept the help that they need from those around them, who love and care for them. In Jesus’ name, amen.
