Is a friend is facing sickness or health issues? Your prayers can offer hope, strength, and healing. Here are 6 prayers for a sick friend.

We all go through times of sickness, and health issues, and sometimes those very close to us are affected. It can be tough to see a friend go through pain, or endure sickness. Apart from caring for our friends in the physical and emotional sense, we can also offer up prayers for our friend, asking God to heal or strengthen them.

Through prayer you can ask God not only to help you support your friend in this trying time, but to give you both comfort, strength, and hope as you walk through this illness, or health issue together.

1. Prayer for Healing

Heavenly Father,

I’m grateful for the comforter and healer that we have in You. Thank You for giving us hope beyond the suffering of this world, and for Your power that exceeds all that we can think of or imagine.

Today, I want to ask for Your hand over my friend’s life. I know that You are sovereign over all things and that there is nothing that happens that You are not aware of, or that You are powerless to.

My prayer is that You would please show Your power to heal in the life of my friend. I ask that You would reach into the places that have been affected, and have caused so much sorrow and pain, and that You would heal it.

Lord, if it is Your will, I ask that You would bring about healing, and strengthen them. Please help them to recover from this battle, and to come out stronger on the other side.

Help them to trust in You, whether You choose to heal them or not, may their faith in You be deeply rooted, and their trust be unshakable. In all things, help them to look to You, and cling to You as their hope. In Jesus’ name, amen.

2. Prayer for Pain Relief

Lord,

I know if there is anyone who understands pain, and has endured pain it is Christ. Through His suffering on this earth, and on the cross, He endured a pain that we cannot imagine. Yet, in that pain, He sympathizes with us, and the pain that we endure in life.

I know that You sympathize with the pain that my friend is experiencing, and You have not turned a blind eye to the hurt that they are enduring. I ask that You would please show them Your compassion, and help them to know Your love for them.

Please bring relief in the areas where they are experiencing pain or discomfort. I ask that You would extend Your kindness to them, and help them to feel embraced by You with comfort, peace and joy.

In those times when the pain feels too much to bear, I ask that You would give them strength. Help them to lean on Your strength when they feel weak, and to seek Your face, when they feel hopeless.

I ask that You lift the burden of pain from their shoulders, and help there be days where they find rest and relief from the constant pain. As they lay their heads down to rest, I ask that You would give them peaceful sleep, and refresh them in the morning with Your mercy. In Jesus’ name, amen.

3. Prayer for Strength

Gracious God,

Where does our help come from, if not from You? We can turn to so many places seeking guidance and strength, and some may provide temporary support, but You alone can strengthen our weary hearts, and bring life to our bones,

Today my dear friend is in need of the strength that only You can give. I know that You are able to lift them up, and renew them in their strength. Please provide them with Your unfailing strength, and lead them to lean on You.

Their body has grown tired, and they have become weary from the health issues that they are experiencing. I ask that You would help them to seek Your face, and find Your strength that is greater than the physical ailments that we struggle with.

As they start their day, I ask that You fill them with energy, and renew them in hope. Please help them not to turn away in despair, but to run to You in faith, knowing that You are a tower of strength for those who trust in You.

I ask that You not only strengthen them in body, but also in their spirit. Please help them not to grow weary in their faith, and not to lose sight of the glory of God which You have created them for. In their weakness, may they find Your strength. In Jesus’ name, amen.

4. Prayer for Surgery

Lord,

I just want to take a moment to thank You for my friend, and the gift that they are to me and those around them. This time isn’t easy, and surgery is often something that is daunting and stressful, but my prayer is that You will infuse their heart with peace as they prepare for surgery.

You know the doctors and nurses who will be operating on them, and what the procedure will look like. I ask that You please prepare the hearts and minds of those who will be a part of this surgery, and give them clarity and steadiness.

Please fill them with Your peace, and keep any distractions at bay, so that they would be able to operate to the best of their abilities, and be led by Your wisdom and guidance.

I ask that You protect my friend as they go into surgery. Please keep them from experiencing any complications, and if anything poses a threat, I ask that You would give the doctors wisdom and help them to act timely and effectively.

May the surgery be under Your watchful eye, and be a success. Please help it go smoothly, and to achieve the purpose that it was intended for. I ask that You would help my friend to recover from the surgery, and to rest and reside in Your peace. In Jesus’ name, amen.

5. Prayer for Overall Health

Father,

It is so easy for us to take things for granted. The fact that we are alive, and have another day given to us is a gift that we often forget to cherish. Please forgive us, and help us to grow in gratitude each day that we get to experience Your mercy.

Today I especially would like to pray for my friend who is struggling with their health and it is affecting different areas of their life. My prayer is that they would know and hold onto Your mercy that You extend to them each day,

As they suffer through health problems, I ask that You bring healing not only to the areas that are in need of it, but also to the parts of their lives that are being affected by this health issue.

Lord, I ask that their relationship with You would be their source of strength and their guiding light. May they seek You both in health and in sickness, in strength and in weakness. In every season of life, may they know You as their North Star.

I ask that You would please support them emotionally, that they may know that they are not alone and that You are always with them. Please guard their minds, and keep defeating thoughts at bay. Please bless their overall health, and keep them in good health. In Jesus’ name, amen.

6. Prayer for Hope

God,

You are the strength of our lives, and we have no hope apart from You. Even in the most dire situations Your hope remains steadfast, and Your love remains immovable. Thank You so much for the hope that You bring!

As I think of my friend, I know that it can be hard to feel hopeful. The health issues that they have, and are experiencing takes a toll on them daily, and it can be hard to feel hopeful, or to look forward to a new day that will be filled with medical issues.

I know Lord that there is nothing in this world that can keep us separated from Your love in Christ. Though we may experience the darkest of nights, and the deepest of pains, in You we have hope that withstands all of the aches of life.

On those days when they feel as though they have no hope, I ask that You would shine Your light brightly into their hearts. Please remind them that You are with them, and that they are not alone.

I ask that You place the hope of eternity in their hearts, and remind them that the pain of this world is only temporary. Help them to look at the things above, and give them hope not only for today but for all eternity. In Jesus’ name, amen.
